The State Library of Victoria is one of Australia's oldest cultural institutions. It is the major reference and research library in Victoria, responsible for collecting and preserving Victoria's documentary heritage and making it available through a range of services and programs.
The Library's Learning Services Division runs a broad range of programs which contribute to the lives of Victorians through active engagement in their history, culture, the world of books, knowledge and ideas. It runs programs based around the themes of:
information literacy, research skills and other library-type stuff
engagement with books and writing - especially reader development
the history and culture of Melbourne and Victoria (which is a mandated collecting area for the Library), and
learning for the future - especially in the dynamic technology and information environment.
It aims to contextualise, enhance and make accessible the Library's offer for a broad audience by:
serving learners onsite, offsite and online
fostering partnerships and collaboration with other organisations, and
developing new audiences.
The division is structured into 3 units:
Education Programs - which covers curriculum-based learning, particularly for schools audiences
Reader Development - which covers non-curriculum-based learning around engagement with books and writing, and
Library Learning - which covers non-curriculum-based learning in the areas of information literacy, technology and learning for the future.
Some key programs relevant to schools audiences include:
ergo, which aims to teach research skills to upper secondary students, linking these to themed explorations of the Library's collections.
Andrew Hiskens, Manager of Learning Services, will be following progress of PLP and participating in some sessions. Andrew is neither an educationalist nor a librarian, but comes from a museums background, having previously worked at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Prior to managing Learning Services, he was Manager of Public Programs, which included events, creating the Library's exhibitions program and galleries, and the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards. He rather likes building enterprises, which is why he is now developing the Library's learning programs.
